Faith House

I haven’t posted a poem in a while. Then I discover that April is simultaneously Alcohol Awareness and Poetry Month?

Faith House

My faith is like a house

whose roof needs to be fixed;

the bathroom needs new grout.

I need to clean the brick

made black by smoke and soot

from a backyard fire youth.

And still, as an adult,

it is my sole refuge

from the dull sting of doubt.

The foundation may tear

but that’s what life’s about:

I work on its repair.

If your faith were a house, what kind of house would be? What shape would it be in? Let me know in the comments.

(No, I did not get the question from BadInterviewQuestions.com…the site doesn’t exist…don’t click it…you’ll feel silly)

Mondays are mundane, why not make them miraculous?

  • That was good! I was really taken in by the photo. I’m a big fan of barn-housed, underground, and grass on the roof. ❤❤❤❤❤ lol
I enjoyed your poem. It made me think.

    • Thank you Google Images! The only photo I can take credit for is the main header, and I can’t take credit for it. That was taken by my beautiful wife in Salt Lake City, UT. I think it’s the Great Salt Lake in the background that gives it an other-worldly feel. Enjoy the new blog Abbie.

  • Very nice, Mark. Thanks for sharing your words. As always, it’s a pleasure to read. – Dan

If my faith were a house, it would have a little mouse scampering up and down the stairs until I became aware that I had become complacent and needed to spruce up where I paid rent, thereby providing myself a fresh sense of awareness of what I know is best.

My faith house would kind of look like my old apartment: a little dirty, cluttered, but ultimately a refuge from the world. Man, I miss that place sometimes….

    • I hear you there Robert. I think I just miss having my own space sometimes. I agree that faith feels like a refuge from all the craziness. Always good to have Writing For Ghosts float on through. Did you check out Christian Wiman yet?

Oops, no. It’s now on my list for today (aside from grading papers and teaching).

  • Wonderful work, as always, Mark. How fortuitous indeed that it’s Alcohol Awareness month and Poetry month. What a way to start it off! Blessings, Paul

  • My faith house used to be a big cold brick barren scary building. But I have since moved out of that dump and I now live in a big warm Craftsman bungalow. Warm wood work all around, greens and Browns, a shady yard, comfortable, filled with the most beautiful and miraculous gifts I’ve ever been given, grace and acceptance, it’s a wonderful safe place to be… And I am profoundly grateful.

  • I don’t know how to like your post, but I really do like the message of this piece Mark – good work!

    • Thom! My fellow teacher-poet. Thanks for the ‘like!’ Yeah, I found when I overload my site with those features it breaks down. Then I realized I want to keep things as simple as I can on here.

  • For a long time, my home was dark and abandoned. Currently, it stands on solid foundation, as I decorate accordingly. I love your poetry!

Have you seen the Robin Williams movie What Dreams May Come? I wont spoil it for you but the run down house at the end would be my faith house at the moment. Rebuilding it one prayer at a time. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.
