Ring ring

My sponsor picks up the phone.

“Mark! How are you?”

“Not good Larry, not good. It’s just too much. It’s too much. The kids aren’t sleeping at night. I’m like a dead man walking at work. Work is stressful. There’s no ME time anymore. I’m losing it.”

“What are you doing?”

“Driving.”

“In your car?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

“To your house?”

“Yes.”

“What will you do when you get there?”

“Eat dinner.”

“With your wife? And your children?”

“Yeah.”

“Where are you coming from?”

“Work.”

“Where you’ve been gainfully employed for how long now?”

“4 years.”

“And this job provides for your wife and kids?”

“Well, yeah.”

“I see. So let’s just leave it at ‘thank you God’.”

Afterword

Those cliché recovery slogans used to fill me with resentment.“Practice an attitude of gratitude” sounded so Hallmark. My first piece in this Slogan Series was “What one day at a time means to me.” And I hope to contribute more pieces that explain how these seemingly corny clichés work miracles in my mundane.

I need gratitude in my life, constant gratitude. If I’m not grateful for what I have in life, I begin to take credit for what I have in life. And if you click around a bit (especially in the Featured In page) you will read (and hear) that my very best thinking landed me in the insane asylum.

It is only through the strength of others that I learned to be strong myself.

  • I wish so much that I had had my recovery program when my kids were little. There is a span of 8 years between my youngest and our 3rd child….totally planned, same hubs…answers to the most common questions. Lol and I found Alanon when she was 4….she us been raised very differently than the first three and they tell her “just be glad mom found Alanon!”
So when my kids were little they slept with us in our bed…..easy nursing access, easy toddler access, and we all slept. The “experts” called it the family bed and it was a whole philosophy….but truthfully, we just wanted to sleep. And it worked for us. And I’m here to tell yo that it’s not true that you will “never” get them out of your bed. Everyone happily sleeps in their own beds in their own houses today. And that leaves my same old husband and me in ours. ❤️

    Yep, that’s what sponsors do.

  • We have so much. Today I was feeling grateful for my arms—as they folded the laundry. Blessings all around. Good stuff Mark, good stuff. ♥
